Canandaigua Lake Angler Diary Program Results for 2015
Just a few notes from the Canandaigua Lake angler diary program results for 2015. In 2015, 24 diary cooperators recorded 371 fishing trips. Anglers caught a total of 503 lake trout, 68 brown trout, and 121 rainbow trout. Anglers averaged 2.1 hours to catch a legal trout, a big improvement from last year. This catch rate is better that the NYSDEC target of 2.5 hours per legal trout on Canandaigua Lake. The percentage of fishing trips in which anglers caught at least one legal length trout was 78%.
Lake Trout - Anglers averaged 1 hour to catch a legal lake trout. Average length of all lake trout caught was 21.6 inches, while average length of harvested lake trout was 23.3 inches. These were both substantial increases from last year. Average weight of all lake trout weighed was 4.3 pounds, while average weight of harvested lake trout that were weighed was 4.7 pounds. These were large increases compared to last year. A few very nice lake trout in the 10 to 14 pound range were reported.
Rainbow Trout - Anglers who were targeting rainbow trout had a catch rate of 6.8 hours to catch a legal rainbow trout. Average length of all rainbow trout caught was 16.8 inches, while average length of harvested rainbow trout was 20.8 inches.
Brown Trout - The brown trout catch of 68 fish in 2015 was the highest since 2005. The 2015 catch rate of 0.18 brown trout per trip compares well with the long term average of 0.15 brown trout per trip.
